LSI packs16 A15 cores in basestation SoC

LSI Corp., introduced its Axxia 5500 series, a family of 28nm basestation SoCs that pack up to 16 ARM Cortex A15 cores riding the new ARM CCN-504 interconnect.
The chips will not sample until fall, but LSI claims it has commitments from top tier basestation makers designing them into systems set to ship in 2014.
The SoCs support up to 16 10Gbit/second Ethernet ports. They also use an array of speciliazed hardware accelarators passed on from existing LSI SoCs for security, packet
processing and other operations.
LSI claims the Axxia 5500 will sport four times the control plane performance and 2.5 times the data plane performance of its existing 3400 series SoCs that use four PowerPC 476 cores.
With the new chips, LSI is following Freescale and others in a board shift to ARM cores in embedded processors.
The SoCs do not include LSI's starcore DSPs the company contends top tier basestation makers prefer to use their own baseband ASICs. letting the LSI SoCs handle L2-L4 processing.

Ceva targets basestations with FP cores

Nvidia Introduces Chimera- World's first mobile computational photography architecture

Forging a path for the next wave of advanced, consumer-focused mobile imaging experiences and appliances. Nvidia today announced new capabilities
delivered by the Nvidia Chimera Computational Photography Architecture. Available in the Nvidia Tegra 4 family of the mobile processors.
Chimera architecture offers a number of features never before available on mobile devices, including always on high damage range photos and
videos HDR panoramic and persistent tap-to-track capabilities.
Chimera architecture provides the power to conduct nearly 100 billion mathematical operations per second to perform image processing. using computational
techniques used in X-ray CT scanners, deep space telescope and spy satellites.
First revealed at CES 2013, the architecture redefines mobile imaging with always on HDR photos and videos. This allows camera users to instantly capture
high quality, HDR images in a vast array of locations and scenes, and under diverse lightning conditions.
Nvidia Chimera is available as technology integrated into the Tegra 4 family, including Tegra 4 the world's fastest mobile processor and the new Tegra 4i the first
integrated Tegra LTE processor.

Nvidia Announces Tegra 4i

Nvidia launched its Tegra 4 'wayne' SoC, a high-end ARM processor with four Cortex-A15 cores and a 72-core GPU. The Tegra 4 is Nvidia's new high end
ARM chip, made for 'super phones' and  tablets. The Tegra 4 does appear to be an expensive and power hungry chip, so in order to complement its flagship
chip Nvidia presented the Tegra 4i. The Tegra 4i is a smaller and more energy efficient chip that is set to release at the end of 2013.
The Tegra 4i is a nanometer chip, but smaller, because Tegra 4i doesn't have a Cortex-A15 cores of the Tegra 4, but revised Cortex A9 cores.
Nvidia claims it's improved the Cortex A9 design, presented the changes to ARM. Which then was integrated into fourth revision of the Cortex A9 core.
This latest revision should be 15 to 30 percent faster at the same clock speed than the previous one. The cores in the Tegra 4i run at an unprecedented
clock speed of 2.3GHz, and Nvidia claims that CPU speed is in fact twice as high as that of the Tegra 3. It's the first SoC to feature the new R4 version of the Cortex A9,
The Tegra 4i also has a fifth energy efficient core that takes over when only little power is required.
The Tegra 4i has only 60 GPU cores compared to the 72GPU cores of the Tegra 4. Nvidia hasn't specified anything yet about the memory interface on the new chip.

Western Digital is working on 5mm thick hybrid drives

Western Digital working on reducing the size of the disks. WD hopes to offer 500GB drives soon that are just 5mm thick. In 2008, a 9.5mm enclosure was required
to harbor such a capacity, a number which dropped down to 7mm just last year.
Western digital has added 32GB of flash memory to the 500GB hard drive. The result is a hybrid disk called WD Black SSDHD. The WD Black SSD has a
downside as well. To use the available storage, special drivers are required for Windows operating system. Western Digital has not yet issued a statement on how this
will affect the installation and ease of use. The 5mm thick drive will have a special SATA-connector which will be featured only on specific ultrabooks.
the exact released hasn't been mentioned yet.
